Socio-economic Factors to Obstetric Problems

Abstract
The clinico-statistical observation was made on 2,899 mothers and 2,944 newborns delivered: at the National Medical Center for 2. years from Dec. 1968 toNov. 1970 to -figure out the relationship of the environmental factors "to .obstetric problems. The results are as follows:
1) The incidence of prematurity and depressed group (Apgar score 0-6) showed a gradual significant decrease from the lower to the upper social classes of the husband and the wife¢¥s father.
2) The prematurity rate, was lower in the occupational group than in none ,occupational except professional group.
3) The incidence of prematurity and depressed group was lower in higher educational group compared to lower educational group.
4) The maternal age influenced the prematurity rate. Lower rates were noted in the young age group of 20-24 and 25-29, and higher in over 35 year old.
5) The maternal physique, both height and weight, was highly associated with prematurity rate, namely, high incidence in short and light women.
6) The gestation period was shorter in the lower social class compared to the middle and upper classes.
7) The incidence of spontaneous delivery was lower in the lower social class and short women, and the incidence of Cesarean section was higher in these groups but no difference was noted in vacuum delivery. 8) The menace of antepartum complication was higher in the lower social class. he antepartum complication influencedd prematurity rate. There was no significant relationship between the living standard and postpartum bleeding.
10) The, perinatal mortality was much lower in the upper husband¢¥s social class- and tall women.
These results provide additional support for the view, based on the available evidence in our society, that the socio-economic factors are signifcantly assosiated with the welfare of the mother and the newborn.
